The points were shared at Villa Park as Jonathan Kodja’s late penalty cancelled out Pontus Jansson’s header.
Leeds made a late change to the team that beat Preston as Liam Cooper replaced Kyle Bartley; who had been ruled out with a minor knee injury.
Aston Villa had most of the first half action with Rob Green the busier of the two goalkeepers.
The home side nearly took the lead within a matter of minutes as Kodja latched on to Kalvin Phillips’ dreadful back pass. The striker took too long over the ball and Jansson blocked the effort.
Kodja went close just minutes later as Phillips was caught on the ball but Green safely palmed his shot away to his left.
Green was called into action on the half hour mark as he tipped over Jordan Ayew’s free kick threatened to loop over the top of the former England goalkeeper.
James Chester went agonisingly wide seconds after, as he met Jordan Amavi’s cross but the centre back’s header went wide of Green’s right hand post.
Kemar Roofe went close for Leeds with just five minutes of the first half remaining following persistent play from Luke Ayling and Hadi Sacko, but the forwards shot was blocked by Chester.

Former Leeds striker Ross McCormack replaced Jack Grealish after half time after the winger picked up a knock just before half time.

Leeds were in front on 54th minute when Jansson met Dallas’ corner and Bunn failed to keep the Swede’s header out.
Jansson nearly doubled Leeds’ lead moments later but his right footed volley clipped the top of Bunn’s crossbar.
Pablo Hernandez replaced Dallas on the 56th minute as Leeds looked to build on their lead.
Kodja went close again for Villa as he shot from a tight angle but Green comfortably saved the fierce shot.
Liam Bridcutt was replaced by Ronaldo Viera with eight minutes of normal time remaining after the midfielder picked up a booking earlier in the game.
Villa were awarded a penalty for hand ball by Cooper after he handled the ball on top of Rudy Guestede’s head.
Kodja stepped up and sent Green the wrong way to bring the home side level.
Sacko went close for Leeds moments after Villa drew level after Sacko’s effort came back off Bunn’s crossbar.
Green was yet again there to save Leeds as he saved Kodja’s one on one effort as four minutes were added on.
The point means Leeds move temporarily above Huddersfield into fourth but could drop out of the play-offs if results don’t go their way.
