WHY LEEDS UNITED IS MY CLUB

This weeks why Leeds United is my club comes Chris Liversidge. Chris is a passionate supporter of the club and currently a season ticket holder. Here is why Leeds United is Chris’s club..

Why support Leeds United?

Started off all the way back in 1966 when my Dad (who is a die-hard Leeds fan and season ticket holder.) took me to see Leeds play Spurs, Eddie Gray scored and we won 2-1 since then I haven’t really missed a home game, I’m 53 we had a wonderful team in the 60s 70s and 80s paused for a bit and then won the league in 1992, still a season ticket holder in the North East stand, as I keep telling people, It’s in your blood, only one team for me and that’s Leeds United

All time favourite goal

Sorry to say it, but it was Eric Cantona’s goal against Chelsea when he flicked it twice and smashed it in, pure class, also Tony Yeboah against Wimbledon, and of course Alan Clarkes winning cup final goal against Arsenal

Greatest moment?

I have enjoyed many moments with Leeds, I suppose it was us beating Bristol Rovers to come up to the championship, I knew we had turned the corner then, after a couple of seasons in league 1

Lowest moment?

Getting relegated when we played Ipswich, score was 1-1 and with 5 minutes to go the Leeds fans invaded the pitch, then I knew we were doomed to league 1

Favourite game?

Many memories, but beating Southampton 7-0 at ER also beating Man U 5-2 that same year, 4-3 against Liverpool 4-3 against Derby, and 4-3 against Southampton away after going 3 goals down, we never make it easy for ourselves

Best away team you’ve witnessed play at Elland Road?

Got to say Roma a few years ago at ER in the UEFA cup they had Totti up front and he oozed class, best individual performance, Lombardo for Crystal Palace against Leeds, he stole the show and got a standing ovation from the Leeds fans, he said afterwards that he had never had a reception from away supporters like that, and if he could have played for Leeds after that game he would have done, man was pure class in midfield, really quality player and we knew it.

How would you describe the last 10 years of the club fortunes?

In the words of our song “and we’ve had our ups and downs”

Somma or Becchio?

Think Becchio gives you that little bit more in his holding play, and getting in the face of the opposition, though Somma knows where the goal is, Becchio for me

And finally if you could pick any player that has ever wore the white jersey in the clubs history to play today who would it be?

Well it would have to be John Charles, although I never saw him play, my dad says he is the best player he has ever seen, and as a die-hard Leeds fan nearly 80 years old, I will respect his judgement, closely followed by Tony Curry in his prime, and of course, the one and only Billy Bremner

This article just hit the point for me. I have seen two dream teams of football in my life: Brazil WC 1970 team and Don Revie’s LEEDS UNITED 1968-1975. Still thinking of that shameful outcome of that swan song of Bayern European Cup final. Tony Currie was the best player I have seen in the Whites, with all respect to DR’s team.
