WHY LEEDS UNITED IS MY CLUB – Matthew Balmforth

by Right In The Gary Kelly's

Each week we receive a high number of applications for why Leeds is my club with many of these from International whites from all the corners of the globe. Over the next few weeks we will be solely dedicating this feature to International Leeds United fans. This week contribution comes from Canadian white Matthew Balmforth . Here is why Leeds United is Matthews club.

Why Support Leeds United?

I was brought up in Scotland, but my Dad is from Halifax. I now live in Toronto. My Dad took me to see Leeds play Nottingham Forest in 99 before we immigrated. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink scored a thunderbolt right in front of my face. The team at that time was brilliant and the shirt was pretty nice too. Lee Bowyer was my favourite player.

All time favourite Goal?

Harry Kewell’s half-volley against Arsenal in 02/03. It was an important match for our survival that season. It showed the quality Kewell had.  It’s a pity he had to leave on such bad terms..

Greatest Moment?

Promotion from League One.  I came over for the Bristol Rovers match hoping I would be there for us getting promoted. When Duffy scored just after halftime my stomach dropped.  Jonny Howson coming off the bench to score that curler, Beckford getting the winner, and the celebrations at the end were brilliant!

Lowest Moment?

Relegation from the Championship and Administration. The Ipswich match. The pitch invasion. Worried that I wouldn’t have a club to support anymore.  Listening to the Radio go through the recent history of Leeds on the way home from the match is when it really began to sink in.

Favourite Game?

Arsenal 2 – Leeds 3 securing our Premier League survival; Manchester Utd 0 – Leeds 1 (Jan. 2010).

Best away team you’ve witnessed play at Elland Road?

I’ve been to Elland Road 5 times, since I live pretty far away. The only team to take anything away was Ipswich Town when we were relegated to League One, but that was down to us not being good enough. Out of the 2 Premiership games I’ve been to I’d have to say Chelsea, but we beat them 2-0 that day (Milner’s curler). I need to get over more often.

How would you describe the last 10 years of the club fortunes?

A Nike swoosh.  After a quick collapse we are now looking to head up the slope to recovery.  Other than that emotions have run high over the last ten years.  Mostly hope, followed by despair when we always seem to slip up.

Somma or Becchio?

Becchio

And finally if you could pick any player that has ever wore the white jersey in the clubs history to play today who would it be?

David Batty or Rio Ferdinand. We need more quality in the defensive department.

If you are based overseas and would like to share us and fellow Leeds United fans why you support the club. Fill out the below form and we will be in contact within 48 hours of your application.

Phil I think a 9,000 mile round trip could be the stumbling block for the lad to visit on a regular basis don’t you agree.

5 times in just over 10 years.. that’s almost 1 game every 2 seasons. Not bad for someone who lives 4,000 miles away. The boy must have quite wealthy parents.
